- Kimberly Groninga makes a splendid debut in Other Things
that Grow. In this work, we learn to perceive the world with more care
and with a more precise lens. Groninga views common objects—the barrel of
a flute—common experiences—falling asleep—and common places—a tree
in her backyard—with unusual detail and insight. Groninga approaches her
world from the angle of a fine sculptor to reveal the true essence of what
we take for granted in the environment around us.
—Mary Swander, Poet Laureate of the State of Iowa, author of The Girls
on the Roof
Kimberly Groninga’s debut collection, Other Things that Grow, is
like a constellation of stars, winking bright and hard in a winter sky. Her
poems orbit around the organic, the natural and quick. Groninga looks our
bright and hard lives dead in the eye and comes away with sharply observed
truths to help us all understand deeply our own worlds. Brava, Kim!
—Vince Gotera, author of Fighting Kite and Ghost Wars

- Father— We are not worthy of the sacrifice you made
on our behalf. Your son—on the cross. We don’t deserve the pieces of
his broken body you gathered and handed out to each of us. But here we
are—with voices, hearts, hands, minds. Wealth. And the only way we can
thank you is to give these gifts—graciously and with the joy your
gifts are intended to bring—to your kingdom on earth. Help us do that.
Make our hands fall open to you. Let gold and silver and anxiety and
fear tumble away—and be replaced with love, gratitude and overwhelming
joy.

- Father, use us to cultivate prayers of thanksgiving.
Let not only our hands and feet move to your command, let our faces
shine like stars with your love. Make it uncontainable, Lord. Burst us
at the seams. And let the paltry material possessions that fall around
us become food for the hungry or shelter for the cold. We get it. We are
supposed to be part of the plan. Your promises aren’t just for us. Use
us to make them true for all people.

- We come to you as your children and on our knees.
